SUMMARY OF THERMAL REQUIREMENTS IN MIL-STD-1540E

MIL-STD-1540E is the most recent test specification update for U.S. government launch, upperstage, and space vehicles. Its approach focuses on re-establishing test requirements consistentwith low-risk, reliable hardware. This paper discusses changes in thermal test environmentsfrom those in previous MIL-STD-1540 versions and the supporting rationale. New strategies toenhance thermal testing perceptiveness and effectiveness are addressed. Criteria for assessingvacuum sensitivity of electronic boxes are discussed. The intent of these enhancements is toprovide greater confidence in the flightworthiness of future spacecraft.
