The Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) is a large-eddy simulation (LES) code, used in fire engineering for modelling the gas phase environment (temperature, heat flux, velocity, species concentrations, etc.) in fires. This paper discusses the application of the FDS for structural fire engineering analysis and design. In particular, a FDS-finite element model (FEM) coupling method was used to model a localized fire test on a real-scale steel beam recently conducted at the National Fire Research Laboratory (NFRL) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The concept of adiabatic surface temperature was used for transferring data from FDS to FEM. A case study on using FDS for structural fire engineering design in an airport project at Beijing China was also presented.
