IS SOLAR ELECTRICITY IN EUROPE EXPENSIVE?

We present estimates of the cost of solar electricity produced by photovoltaic installations in Europeusing a geographical information system. Data on the monthly and yearly solar irradiation are combined withestimates for the cost of acquiring, financing and running PV systems. Two case studies are presented: a small(domestic) system (less than 5kWp) and a larger (power) system (1MWp and more). The costs of PV electricity arecompared to some existing feed-in tariffs and to simple estimates of end-user electricity prices (for small domesticsystems) and estimates of peak-load electricity prices (for larger power systems).
