Industrial Technologies Related to Arsenic Extraction

Arsenic is a particular element whose properties make it equally desirable and undesirabledepending on the field of application or the process involved or related to. Arsenic trioxide, oneof the common compounds of arsenic is classified as a suspected human carcinogen a cause forcertain types of cancers. It has also beneficial effects in other fields such as in wood preservation,agricultural chemicals etc. Similarly arsenic metal is slightly poisonous but it is beneficial sinceit is primarily used in the manufacture of lead alloys for use in lead-acid batteries. Arsenic isrightly a cause for concern in non-ferrous smelting metallurgy however its extraction as a byproducts might be beneficial. As a result industrial and feasible technologies for arsenicextraction play an important role. In this paper, in order to have a clear picture of the state-of-theart of the past and present arsenic metallurgy the authors review several industrial technologiesused for extraction of arsenic as a by-product or in other ways. Some bench scale technologies orother recently proposed extraction technologies are also reviewed.
