For the development of low-cost silicon refining process for solar cells, the present authorshave been studying the low temperature refining technique, “solidification refining of siliconwith Si-Al melts at 1173 – 1273 K”. In this study, segregation ratios of impurity elements suchas P, B, Fe, etc., between solid silicon and Si-Al melt were experimentally or theoreticallydetermined to evaluate the purification ability of this process. The segregation ratios of theseelements at 1273 K were found to be much smaller than those between solid/liquid silicon at itsmelting point, which revealed that the low temperature solidification process would be moreeffective for purification compared with the ordinary solidification refining.
