THE IMPACT OF KITCHEN ON THE CONCENTRATION OF INDOOR AIR POLLUTANTS

During July 2003 to August 2004, the indoor air quality of 26 residential homes in 6 cities of different climate areas in China was investigated. By analyzing the L/K ratio and correlation of each pollutant between living room and kitchen, we found that concentrations of pollutants in living room such as SO2, NO, NO2, CO2, CO and PM10 were influenced by kitchen, and the impact is weakening in turn. The most influenced SO2 has a high L/K ratio and correlation, which are 0.883 and 0.886, respectively; the weakest influenced is PM10, the L/K ratio and R2 are 1.201 and 0.548, respectively;, combining with other data, we found that PM10 was more influenced by ETS(environmental tobacco smoke) and ambient environment adjacent to residential homes. Besides, we found that the concentrations of CO2 and SO2 were significantly different among different fuel combustion exhaust. The higher concentrations of the two pollutants were observed in coal gas firing families,while the concentrations of CO2 and SO2 in natural gas firing families were just 72.4% and 28.1% of that in coal gas firing families, respectively. The difference is caused by the different ingredients quantities contained in the two fuels. The period and style of cooking were other factors that affect the concentrations of pollutants in the kitchen. Concentrations of CO and PM10 were substantially the same in both types of families.
