The outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) caused a tremendous impact to Taiwan. In order to accommodate the SARS patients ERL's engineers successful built up 140 respiratory isolation rooms in the Armed Forces Song Shah Hospital during two weeks in 2003. In urgent the bio-hazardous air cleaner had been developed and used in this hospital to control the nosecomial aroused by SARS. The negative pressure, ventilation rate and noise of all isolation rooms had been tested and we got the satisfied performance with regard to the air-conditioning and ventilation/exhaust system of medical building. However it is the big problem to change the polluted HEPA and key components inside the bio-hazardous air cleaner. The fuming gas decontamination technology has been developed during two months. Several facilities, for example,the fuming gas chamber and generator, process control and exhaust system have been build up in our laboratory. How to build up the bio-hazardous air cleaner and to retrofit the HVAC system of respiratory isolation room are illustrated in this paper. Also the fuming gas decontamination of the bio-hazardous air cleaner was discussed in more detail in this paper.
