This study investigated houses located in the northern region of Japan. The investigation included the measurement of the ventilation rate using three different methods, namely the constant concentration tracer gas method, measurement of airflow at inlet/outlet, and the PFT method. This paper presents the results of the constant concentration method, obtained with a B&K 1302 multi gas monitor and two B&K 1303 multipoint samplers and dosers, and presents an example of improving the ventilation by increasing the ventilation rate. It was found that the outdoor airflow rate was insufficient for many houses, and some ventilation systems were not properly operated. The influence on the ventilation rate in each house of opening a window, operating the fans installed in the kitchen or bathroom, wind speed, indoor/outdoor temperature difference, and the air-tightness of the house is made clear.
