A STUDY ON INDOOR AIR QUALITY OF URBAN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS IN CHINA

Recently, indoor air pollution problem has attracted considerable attention especially because the pollutants (volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbonyl compounds) in indoor air have a great effect on people's health in China. In order to look into the actual conditions of residential indoor air environment in urban areas in China,we have carried out an investigation from 2002 to 2004 by the measurement of chemical substance concentrations (VOCs, earbonyl compounds) and questionnaire approach. The ehemical substance concentrations have been measured at 103 residences in 7 cities of China (Harbin, Urumqi, Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha, Chongqing,Kunming). Concentration measurement of indoor, outdoor and personal exposure were simultaneously carried out by passive sampling for 5 days in all residences. In addition, in order to get the basic information of indoor environment, the questionnaire were distributed. The investigation revealed that the average concentrations of benzene, toluene and formaldehyde were high in urban residences of China, and the concentration level of chemical substances is different between in these 7 cities according to climatic conditions.
