Potentials of a knowledge-based system for bridge management optimisation

Bridge management activities are based on extensive knowledge and experiences of previous works; therefore are considered knowledge intensive. These skills and expertise are in short supply where staff turnover is high in a buoyant civil engineering industry. The demographic situation of bridge management offices also indicates that many experienced bridge engineers and managers are reaching retirement age. Knowledge-based systems enable decision making to be based on knowledge derived from experience and skills of experts, supported by historical data and information. This paper aims to demonstrate the potentials of implementing a knowledge-based bridge management system (KB-BMS) to achieve optimisation of funding, while retaining knowledge and experience.
