Cable inspections in the last 20 year in the US and more recently in Japan show that bridge cables as traditionally protected are prone to deterioration at unacceptable rates. Concerns for safety have resulted in the development of definite inspection procedures and methods of estimating remaining cable capacity. A comprehensive report has been released by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) regarding the work on these matters with proposed guidelines (Mayrbaurl 2004). This paper focuses on some highlights of this report as well as other maintenance issues.
