Recently, the realization of cutting operations without a coolant at work-sites has become an important research subject in the field of eco-cutting. The purpose of the present study is to clarify the possibility of an ecological cutting process for the high-speed machining of nickel-based super alloy Inconel 718 which usually requires a lot of coolant during machining. A dry cutting and a wet cutting with a coolant as well as an oil-mist cutting were conducted in this study. TiCN-Al_2O_3-Ti compound CVD coated carbide inserts and (Ti,AI)N PVD coated carbide inserts were used for the high speed turning of the periphery of round bars. It was found that Inconel 718 as a low machinability material could efficiently be machined at a cutting speed of 100m/min using a combination of PVD coated inserts and a 12ml/h vegetable oil mist at 0.1 MPa and 0.5MPa air. Particularly, the prevention of tool wear could occur in relation to the dimensional accuracy of the machined workpiece.
