Laboratory for Space Systems (LSS) in TokyoInstitute of Technology has developed a separationsystem for a 1kg pico-satellite called CUTE-Ilaunched on 30 June 2003. In this paper, we discussthe required functions for pico-satellite separationsystems and outline design and development of theCUTE-I separation system. Various tests results arementioned to evaluate the system performance suchas separation velocity and attitude dynamicsfluctuations obtained via a microgravity experimentusing a drop tower facility. We also discuss on-orbitseparation results by comparing downlink data fromorbiting CUTE-I with the ground test results.
