The Variable Matrices Method (VMM), which is based onthe properties that adaptive structures identify their ownunknown structural characteristics by their variable andcontrollable structural parameters, is proposed to identifystructural matrices. The identifiable degrees of freedomof the structural matrix are determined theoretically by thenumber of variable devices and their change step of variablevalues. A simple spring-mass system attached withone variable stiffness spring is demonstrated to investigatethe limitation and possibilities of the proposed methods.Numerical examples indicate that some combinations ofmeasured mode, location of variable stiffness spring andtheir change steps have difficulties to identify the stiffnessmatrix exactly, while the other combinations identify exactones. VMM indicates the possibility to identify the structuralmatrices exactly only with the one variable device atthe suitable location and the observable modes data causedby the appropriate change steps of the variable stiffness.
