Today, improving the operating rate of equipments directly affects the benefits of the enterprise, thus it’sbecoming hot research spot to keep the manufacturing equipment satisfactorily operating as long as possible. In thispaper, a kind of active maintenance strategy for CNC machine tools is developed based on the idea of intelligentmaintenance (IM), which is described as “measurement->performance evaluation-> preventative maintenance->self-maintenance ”. The general construction of intelligent maintenance system is built for CNC machine tools. A sortof double maintenance mode is presented based on the web based virtual instrument system to ensure the flexibilityand responsibility of maintenance. Discussion is focused on the research strategies of relevant key technologiesincluding intelligent prediction and evaluation of machine tools’ performance degradation; remote intelligencemaintenance platform of CNC machine tools and self-maintenance design methodology of CNC machine tools. Moreworks are being done to put these strategies into industrial application.
