This paper presents a design, simulation and preliminary experimental results of a stand-alonehybrid wind-photovoltaic system powering a reverse osmosis (RO) desalination unit with anenergy recovery system of Clark pump type.The hybrid wind-photovoltaic system consists of 18 solar panels (Arco Solar) which are nowcompatible to Shell SM50-H with total rated peak power of 846 Wp, connected to a deep dischargelead acid battery bank of 315 Ah/24 V via DC-DC charge controller and 1 kW Whisper wind turbineconnected to the same battery via AC-DC charge controller The load of this system is a permanentmagnet DC motor connected directly to a rotary vane pump, which provides the RO system with thefeed water. The RO unit contains a hydraulic energy recovery unit that acts as a high-pressure pump,this configuration promises to deliver 2.2 m3/day of potable water for decentralized communities andwith only 4.2 kWh/m3 specific energy consumption.
