Sliding Friction Coefficients of Single Maize Seed onVarious Structural Surfaces

Sliding friction coefficients of single seed of the maize Jidan-180 on various structuralsurfaces were examined. The friction tests were run on a ball-on-disc apparatus. The moisturecontent of the seeds was 9.3 to 20.1 %w.b. The normal load was 0.5, 1 and 2 N and the slidingvelocity was 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 m/s during tests. The surrounding temperature was 21 °C and therelative humidity was 30 % throughout the tests. It was shown that the coefficients of friction of singleseed of maize could effectively be examined using the ball-on-disc apparatus. The coefficients ofsliding friction of the single seed against surfaces of canvas, rubber, stainless steel sheet, galvanizedsteel sheet and polyethylene sheet increased with the moisture content of the maize seed according
