Key Concepts and Observations Associated with a Safety Management System

Most recently the international commercial aviation community has moved toward establishment of aSafety Management System. The classical safety program or system safety program may have evolvedmore appropriately into a safety management system. In the United States Grimaldi and Simonds1 hadinitially discussed the concept of Safety Management in the 1950’s and generally, most of the concepts andobservations made then remain appropriate. This paper provides an overview of key concepts andobservations associated with a Safety Management System.
