The automotive industry has challenges in finding suitable and cost-effective hardware for research anddevelopment of embedded applications. One current focus is on future communication protocols in thecontrol-by-wire sector. The protocols of interest are FlexRay, TTCAN, and TTP/C.The project described in this paper has gathered stakeholders from academia, industry and researchinstitutes to jointly document industry specific requirements for distributed control-by-wire applications.These requirements will be used in the design of two general purpose development boards, which willimplement several different communication concepts. The requirements are used in the design andproduction of the boards. Each project participant will receive a cluster of six boards of each type. Bysupplying all project partners with software and hardware, our hope is to support joint research effortswithin the control-by-wire discipline. Further, the project is non-commercial and the project result will beopen among the fourteen project participants. The project is financed by the Swedish Agency for InnovationSystems and the project participants.The boards that will be developed will use microcontrollers from Motorola. For the first board, aimed fornon-critical functions, we have chosen to use one controller from the HCS12 family. The second board willtarget more safety critical applications. Here we will use a MPC56X controller with a HCS12 as a built inmonitor microcontroller. Both controllers are targeted for the automotive industry. Further, the boards willhave a wide range of I/O to support a wide usage in research activities. The boards will be complementedby communication controllers mounted on separate boards.
