TREATMENT OF CONTAMINATED DREDGED MATERIALIN HARBOUR AREASREVIEW ON 10 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE

Port development and maintenance alter the hydrodynamic conditions ofthe waterway resulting in accumulation of sediments at unwanted areas. Moreover sedimentsare often (historically) contaminated by point and diffuse sources upstream. In thepast several environmentally acceptable treatment techniques for contaminated dredgedmaterial (CDM) were developed and realised on a large scale. In the aim to create moretreatment capacity for CDM, finding proper areas for a treatment centre or a disposal siteis often one of the biggest obstacles. On the other hand harbours are also often saddledwith contaminated areas on land, due to former industrial activities or illegal dumping.Rehabilitation of these areas is mostly very expensive, moreover because the originatorsare often unknown or disappeared. Combining the sanitation of such sites with theinstallation of a treatment centre or the reuse on these areas of treated sediments, canoffer a breakthrough in solving the above-mentioned problems.
