Use of Stainless Steel Reinforcing in Coastal Bridges

Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) pioneered the use ofstainless steel in its Coast Highway Bridges to achieve a useful life of over 120 years. Utilizing extensive information available, ODOT selected three appropriate alloys. Four bridges are complete. An inland highway bridge is in design using stainless steel to resist deicing salts.
