Precast segmental concrete V-piers comprise the chief fixed span substructure components of the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Large precast segments, construction over water, and complex pier geometry have encouraged both Maryland and Virginia approach contractors to developed creative precasting and erection methods. Examples include the use of temporary stays during cantilevered construction, barge mounted cranes to place 155 metric ton (170 U.S. tons) precast segments, and "long-line" casting beds with curved soffit and side forms.
