The experiment study on surface modification of metal material by non-thermal plasma producing by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) with N_2 is reported, and the relationships between hardness and thickness of nitrided layer with discharge parameters, processing temperature, processing time are discussed. Optimizing parameters is obtained about dealing with 38CrMoAl Steel by N_2 -DBD. A novel method of surface modification of metal material by the micro-discharge of dielectric barrier with atmospheric is presented.
