Doubly-fed induction generators combined with power electronic converters are employed as power control and utility interface devices in Megawatt class windturbines. This paper describes the design considerations and test results for a state of the art power electronic conversion system that is optimized for new and future system requirements. System performance benefits are realized through the coordination of the design of the generator with that of the power electronics converter for this specialized application. Important new utility performance requirements have been mandated that must be designed for and validated through testing. Key design considerations for this system include the use of multiple parallel IGBT based power conversion modules and the implementation of control hardware and software to meet new utility transient ride-through requirements. This paper provides a description of the control system, converter hardware, utility requirements, and test results.
