Fast Replacement Route Discovery in Location-Aided Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Mobile ad hoc networks are composed of moving wireless hosts which form wireless networks. For communication to occur between hosts that are not within each other's range, routes involving intermediate nodes must be established; however, since the hosts may move in unpredictable way, a host that was part of a route may move away from its upstream and downstream partners, causing broken link. Our work shows that by utilizing only local geographic information, a host can anticipate its neighbor's departure and, if other hosts are available, find a replacement path by choosing hosts to bridge the gap, keeping the path connected. This paper proposes a distributed scheme that improves the location-aided algorithms to discover the replacement path fast. The benefit of the proposed algorithm is that this reduces the interruptions in service.
