Eight performance indicators are proposed to measure new product development (NPD) performance, since the performances cannot be treated as one dimension. We use the survey data from Italian and Japanese companies in machinery and electrical & electronics industries. Several important factors are abstracted from those performance indicators with different factorial structures between Italian and Japanese samples. We then explore the impact on NPD performance of various practices, processes, strategic guide and capabilities concerning NPD. Multiple regression models show that some of those drivers have diverse impacts upon the considered performance indicators. Association between drivers and NPD performance substantially differ among performance indicators and between the two countries.
