This research explores the varying impacts of project management aspects across three empirically-identified new product development (NPD) project types: 1) incremental NPD projects, 2) architectural NPD projects, and 3) radical NPD projects. The results of an exploratory analysis of 137 NPD projects indicate no performance differences across the three project types in terms of project timeliness, development efficiency, or product design quality. However, the impacts of project management aspects on performance did vary significantly according to project type. NPD project managers and researchers would benefit by recognizing and acting upon the differing uncertainties associated with different types of NPD.
