An Epidemiological Approach To Aviation Safety:Standardization and Risk Factor Identification

Epidemiology is a branch of statistics, which is concerned, with the distribution of disease inhuman populations. Of particular importance are risk factors, and the effect those factors have onthe rate of disease. Health status and the risk of failure are also significant issues for complexmachines such as aircraft. In this paper some traditional methods for risk assessment andcomparison in epidemiology are presented in the context of aviation safety. The use of relativerisk, standardized failure ratio’s and odds ratio’s is illustrated for data on mechanical failures,which result in an unscheduled landing of an aircraft.
