The combustion behaviour of coal is significantly influenced by its rank,maceral compositionsand microlithotypes.These macerals due to their distinct and unique physical properties andchemical makeup have different burning characteristics.The paper investigates on the burningbehaviour of coals of Indian origin in a Drop Tube Furnace with particular emphasis on the roleof macerals and their associations.Four coals of different rank and petrographic makeup were studied.The burnout behaviour wasestimated from the chemical analyses of the char samples collected from the DTF.The burningcharacteristics of one of the coals seem to deviate from the normal trend with rank variations.An attempt has been made to correlate the burnout with the petrographic macerals andmicrolithotypes present in the coals of different ranks.The morphology of the residual charscould be linked with the microlithotypes present in the parent coal.The inertinites oftenconsidered to be least reactive out of the three distinct maceral groups can,however,show higherreactivity towards combustion.
