FBG sensors were applied to cure and health monitoring of filament winding (FW) glass/epoxy pipes by using embedded FBG fiber optic sensors. Three kinds of pipes, which are wound by 45° helical and 45° helical + 15° parallel winding methods, were used for experiments. FBG sensors were embedded along axis direction of pipes or fiber reinforcing direction. From the results of cure monitoring, it was found that FBG sensors could be used for measurement of curing shrink as well as thermal residual strain. It also appeared that curing strain of FW pipes during heating showed complex behavior due to the winding force. The results of tensile tests showed that strain from FBG sensors had very good agreement with that from attached strain gauges. The FBG sensors which were embedded in helical + parallel winding pipes could monitor transverse crack by observing FBG spectral shape. From the results of a fatigue test, instability of strain output from FBG sensors were shown after crack initiation. From the results obtained in this study, it can be concluded that embedded FBG sensor in FW FRP pipe have high functions of real-time cure and health monitoring.
