As part of a PhD research project an investigation is being made by the authors to derive a computer based methodology to predict the voltage distribution within the windings of a power transformer, which is subjected to Very Fast Transient Overvoltages, caused by the operation of a Gas Insulated Substation Disconnector. Part of the study requires modelling leakage reactance of transformer windings. The Paper describes the analytical and numerical techniques available and makes a comparison of the results for both analytical and numerical methods with recommendations on the most suitable application method considered for the continuation of the authors research work.
