A simulation based feasibility study of a paper mill producing simultaneously printing paper and mechanically pre-treated biorefinery feedstock was performed. A process model of a modern paper mill served as a reference for the new process alternatives, in which a TMP reject fraction (feedstock) was conducted out of the papermaking process. The share of the removed pulp fraction in the paper was compensated either by using other raw materials (e.g. recycled pulp) or alternative process/paper machine operation practices. Manufacturing costs for each new concept were estimated by computing the variable costs. The cost effects were allocated both for tonne of paper produced and for tonne of TMP reject pulp produced. Thus, a unit cost for the biorefinery feedstock was obtained for each alternative. The unit cost varied from 60 to 360 ?/ad-t feedstock. The simulation method developed can be utilized for the early evaluation of alternative concepts of process renewal.
