Build-up, as in the adhesion of material to the insides of process equipment, can be a major problem for continuous industrial agglomeration processes. It increases costs, lowers reliability and can alter agglomeration behaviour. Despite this, build-up does not seem to be an area of current research. The current paper discusses a mechanism for plastic yield of the intermediate wet-mass material and its subsequent adhesion and build-up in agglomeration equipment. The likelihood of build-up occurring can be correlated to the constitutive behaviour of the wetted mass as it impinges on surfaces in the mixer. The impact velocity of the wet particles on can be estimated using CFD codes.
