The building damage due to a scenario earthquake in Metro Manila, Philippines is preliminarily assessed using the soil profile data and the building inventory data. The west Marikina fault, which is located in the western part of Metro Manila, is set as the source of the scenario earthquake (M 6.7). The soil profile model is constructed based on the geophysical survey and the boring data, and the site-dependent response spectrum of the ground motion is computed by the empirical method. Based on the building survey together with the existing GIS data, the building inventory data is constructed. The building response for the scenario earthquake is evaluated by the capacity spectrum method. The computed results show that the damage of low-rise buildings is concentrated in Marikina and Manila areas on soft soils, and that the damage of mid-rise buildings is relatively severe in Manila area.
