Displacement-based seismic design and assessment of structures require the reliable definition of displacement spectra for a wide range of periods and damping levels. Generally, only the acceleration spectra are provided by existing seismic codes. Based on the attenuation relationship of the earthquake intensity in the zonation map of the third generation in China and the attenuation relationship of the peak ground motion obtained from national and foreign earthquake records, the control periods of the typical design spectrum are developed. And the procedure for constructing the spectrum of dynamical amplification factor β is presented. Comparison researches are performed between the proposed β spectra and the transitions of Eurocode 8. Altogether 90 earthquake records on hard, medium and soft site in America are chosen to check the validity of the proposed β spectrum. The displacement design spectra compatible with the advised β spectrum are also constructed. The elastic and inelastic displacement design spectra are presented according to the different sites and the peak accelerations. They can be used in the displacement-based seismic design at the different limit state.
