Integrating System Dynamics Modelling and Case Study Research Method: A theoretical framework for process improvement

The case for integrating research methods generally, and more specifically that for combining systemdynamics modelling and case study research approaches is strong. Yet, research designs thatextensively combine both system dynamics modelling and case study in requirements engineeringprocess modelling are rare. Triangulation of methods while not new, has not been applied inrequirements engineering process modelling and improvement research. This paper aims to provide auseful and systematic reference point for researchers who wish to work in the RE processimprovement and generally to encourage careful work on the conceptualisation and execution ofDynamic Synthesis methodology in RE process and to a wider software process modelling field. Thepaper addresses the philosophical and theoretical issues concerning the nature of combining the casestudy and process simulation research approaches, and methodological issues on conduct andreporting of this type of research design. The paper suggests that the potential usefulness of theDynamic Synthesis Methodology is in aiding researchers in improving both building and testingtheories in the requirements engineering process modelling and improvement.
