CRITICAL COMMENTS ON EUROCODE 8SECTIONS 3 AND 4, DRAFT No.1 / MAY 2000

After several years of promotional application of Eurocode EC8, some critical remarks concerningspecific provisions seem to be useful and necessary in order to support its further improvementand probable conversion into an European Standard. The remarks of this paperrelate to Sections 3 and 4 of Draft No1 of prEN 1998-1/May 2000, and cover a variety of topicssuch as : Damping correction factor in the design response spectrum, criteria for regularityin plan, modeling of structures, simplified modal and multi-modal response spectrum analysis,orientation of seismic excitation, combination of the seismic action effects and P-Δ-effects. The comments mainly concern application rules as well as fundamental principles andshow the necessity of revising a series of provisions in order to either correct their formulationor update them on the basis of recent research results. To serve this purpose, every commentis accompanied by the correspondent corrective authors' proposal. The proposals takeinto account all currently known scientific research results as well as the modern calculationtools and analysis software available in today's engineering practice.
