9 Dock at Devonport Royal Dockyard has been upgraded to provide a secure environment torefit and refuel Vanguard class nuclear submarines. The upgraded facility was designed tomeet all appropriate standards, consistent with best practice in the nuclear industry. A majorelement in the design of the dock is the seismic qualification to a design basis earthquake witha peak horizontal ground acceleration of 0.25g plus a 40% margin.The finite difference program FLAC was used for time domain analyses to capture theresponse of the dock structures during the seismic event. A series of plane strain models weredeveloped using a staged approach, working from simple linear models through to modelsincorporating geometric and material non-linearity. Extensive verification of the software andvalidation of the models was carried out.
