The problem of direct lightning strike effects on advanced composite materials has attracted only limited attention from the scientific community. With the recently constructed lightning strike generator at the University of Washington, capable of 100,000 Amps and 40,000 Volts, lightning strike damage is inflicted on to composite panels in the effort to understand the fundamental material response, including performing quantitative measures of current distribution in the plate, damage state and type, and residual performance.
