Among the objectives of the Li/MnO_2 pouch cell and battery engineering and manufacturing efforts enabled by the Lithium Manganese Dioxide Pouch Technology - Operating and Support Cost Reduction Initiative (OSCR) program awarded to Ultralife Batteries, Inc (UBI) by the US Army CECOM, UBI recognized the need for Li/MnO_2 pouch cells to be stored at +71°C without dimensional change (swelling) or leakage. Based on these requirements, cell design efforts were focused on reduction of electrolyte vapor pressure in the cell, an increase in the package seal strength and the incorporation of cell manufacturing techniques that minimize carbon dioxide generation. The result of the work performed is a cell that can be stored at temperatures up to 71°C without dimensional change while maintaining the capacity, weight and safety advantages of the Li/MnO_2 pouch technology.
