A 190 Ah li-ion elliptic cylindrical cell was studied for application in the Electric Auxiliary Power Unit of the Space Shuttle. With the requirement for a 5- year and 12-mission battery that provides 39 kWh of energy, the 190 Ah MELCO/JSB li-ion cell was selected. Cycle life testing using the mission profile for the Electric Auxiliary Power Unit was performed. The testing included charge and discharge cycles using mission profile at normal and accelerated rates. The data obtained from these tests will be used in the calculation of the reliability of these cells.
