The potential for environmental degradation of equipment is often not adequately considered when materials of construction and fabrication techniques are selected. Some codes and standards address minimum requirements for mechanical properties, without requiring that the potential effects of corrosion and environmental cracking be considered. As a result, premature failure can occur even though code requirements were met and the mechanical properties were adequate at the time the equipment entered service.
