USING DEA TO MEASURE FATALITY RELATED EFFICIENCY IN THE U.S. TRUCKING INDUSTRY

Benefits and costs from investments in public infrastructure accrue to numerous parties throughout the economy. This study uses trucking industry income and number of truck-related fatal accidents to establish an efficient frontier of operation for each of the 48 contiguous states. We determine the lost trucking income and the excess fatalities from states not operating on the efficient frontier. Our panel data allow construction of indicators of productivity change shown to be the sum of an index of efficiency change and technical change.
