This article presents a cooperative-sensing strategy for automated digitisation of free-form surfaces with controlled reconstruction accuracy. The developed approach consists of two stages, the initial surface triangulation process for automated scanning planning (ASP) and the adaptive digitising strategies (ADS) for on-line digitising accuracy evaluation. The first stage, ASP, effectively utilises the advantages of integrating various digitisers to avoid the individual limitations of applied sensors. Two CCD cameras are used to rapidly detect the object's position and measure its surface boundary coordinates using the 3D stereovision detection. The second stage, the ADS, then performs an on-line automated evaluation for ensuring digitising quality. The proposed methodology was implemented by integrating a Mitutoyo CMM, a laser stripe probe with two CCD cameras and a rotary table device as an integrated automated system for intelligent free-form surface digitisation. An industrial application was used to attest the feasibility of the approach.
