Risk assessment of rising groundwater levels in the Thiaroye suburb zone (Dakar, Senegal)

The superficial nature of the groundwater table at the vicinity of the pumping field located in the populated zone of Thiaroye constitutes a real environmental problem for local population. Simulation of a planned cease of pumping due to excessive nitrate contamination using a hydrogeological model has shown a rise in the groundwater level up to less than 1m below ground surface and a likely risk of health and flooding.
