Profit for runoff formation and groundwater dynamics drawn from an Integrated hydrological Catchment system Approach (ICA) is demonstrated on the example of the Gr. Schacht basin in the Harz Mts, Germany. After introduction of environmental conditions, experimental tools, monitoring systems and methods applied (basin water balance, environmental and artificial tracer techniques, hydrogeological survey, geophysical prospecting, hydrogeochemistry) respective findings will be summarized and evaluated. It will be shown how findings can contribute to process identification and parameterization followed up in the draft of conceptual basin runoff and subsurface storage model with the fissured rock aquifer as the focal compartment. Concluding, groundwater transit times are long enough to buffer acid atmogenic inputs, and ICA is a reasonable mean to obtain efficiently relevant system hydrological information.
