Canals are commonly used for irrigation purposes, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. In many areas, recharging of groundwater systems due to canal seepage leads to the growth of water table near to the ground surface. It causes many kinds of environmental problems such as water logging, soil salinity etc. Therefore, knowledge of water table variations in response to recharge from canal seepage is essential to prevent such environmental problems. This work deals with the development of a mathematical model to predict the behavior of water table fluctuation in response to time-varying recharge applied periodically from any number of canals of different width. Application of the model in prediction of water table fluctuation has been demonstrated with the help of an example problem.
