Powerful Gearboxes for Plastics Extrusion Especially in the US Market - A Market Study -

A technically 100% correct comparison of different gearboxes remains difficult, as a variety of technical details have to be set to a common basis. This article can only attempt to shed some "light into darkness". The different demands on the application factor K_A for load capacity calculation of the gears and those on lifetime of the bearings in interdependence of the different markets are explained to a certain degree. It could, however, be verified that economical high-torque- and/or high-speed-drives for twin-screw extruders can and have to combine low weight, simplicity of service and low costs in operation. To accomplish this, different gearbox designs were brought to a common basis and compared. The trend towards more efficient gearboxes that need low maintenance is obvious and continues. The desire for better performance is still a driving factor. Modern and good gearbox concepts can realize those needs utilizing acceptable costs.
