VIRTUAL ASSEMBLY IN A CAVE~(TM) ENVIRONMENT

Assembly planning in a virtual environment has attracted much attention nowadays. This paper describes a fully Immersive Virtual Assembly System (IVAS), by which a production engineer can interactively and intuitively perform assemblability evaluation and assembly planning in a fully immersive CAVE environment. Details are provided for implementation of a virtual assembly system, together with benefits and lessons learned from using IVAS to make the assembly planning of the chassis of a grab.
