An Al-3Mg-0.5Mn alloy was deformed up to an effective strain of 10, by equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE). The processing strain was found to have a profound effect on the materials recrystallisation behavior and resultant tensile properties after annealing. At conventional strains the alloy discontinuously recrystallised, giving a gradual change in tensile properties, with increasing annealing temperature. However, when deformed to a strain of 10, it continuously recrystallised which lead to a very abrupt step-change in properties as a function of annealing temperature.
